Aalto Campus Wayfinding

2015-2016

Tri-lingual outdoor wayfinding system for the Aalto University Campus in Otaniemi, Finland.

Based on a fellow student’s visual design concept, we created the overall information structure and selected the content for the university’s outdoor wayfinding system, as well as implemented the production of directional signages, information boards and printed maps.

The production process also included the custom-design of a new campus map, highlighting important buildings, restaurants, sights and landmarks in the area. Furthermore we designed a set of map icons to complement the existing signage in the main building.

Various matters had to be considered in the design process, ranging from Aalto University’s design and language guideline prerequisites, diverging demands from different stakeholders, heritage conservation requirements, to the harsh finnish climate conditions.

Designed in collaboration with Anne Pasanen, with technical construction by Anne Lehtonen from ISS.
